Robots to the rescue | Science News

In Hollywood, humanoid robots can do just about anything, including attempt to take over the world. In the real world, however, these bots struggle to do what humans do with great ease, in minutes, things like walking over piles of rubble, getting in and out of cars, moving through doorways and picking up and dropping debris.

For years scientists have tried to overcome these limitations in hopes of using the robots in the rubble of disasters similar to the World Trade Center collapse or the Fukushima power planet meltdown.

Final Mission at RoboCup German Open 2014 Rescue Robot League competition

This video shows the complete final mission of Team Hector Darmstadt at the RoboCup German Open 2014 Rescue Robot League competition. We focus on robot autonomy, so the robot is controlled autonomously whenever possible. The robot has to search for simulated victims (emulated by babydolls and heating pads) and also map QR codes located in the environment. The environment is unknown to the robot, it thus has to perform Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to localize itself and learn a map of the environment at the same time.

Robots to the Rescue (feat. MDS robot Nexi)

The Personal Robots group presents a scenario demonstrating mixed-initiative human-robot teaming for disaster response. The humanoid robot Nexi and a team of robot helicopters are deployed in response to a simulated fire aboard a Navy ship. Working together with a remote human operator, the robots search for survivors and guide them to safety. A mixed-initiative tasking system allows the human operator to specify team goals via a tasking interface, and also allows goals to be generated by the robots as a result of local observations and interactions with victims.

David Hu: Snakes Improve Search-and-Rescue Robots By observing 20 different species of snakes at Zoo Atlanta, Georgia Tech has built a new search-and-rescue robot designed to use less energy. The project is overseen by David Hu, an assistant professor in the Schools of Mechanical Engineering and Biology, and Hamid Marvi, a Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. candidate.
