Humanoid Robots Playing Soccer, Part 2: How They Work

Humanoid Robots Playing Soccer, Part 2: How They Work
In July, the U.S. scored a major international soccer victory. While the nation was unable to bring home the Women's World Cup, Team DARwIn took first place in the Humanoid Kid Size competition at the 2011 RoboCup tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. The robots, whose name stands for "Dynamic Anthropomorphic Robot with Intelligence," are a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania and Virginia Tech.

Penn Engineering team members who traveled to the competition included Stephen McGill, Seung-Joon Yi, Yida Zhang, along with Jordan Brindza, Ashleigh Thomas, Spencer Lee, and Nicholas McGill, who are undergraduate and graduate students in the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Laboratory.

First 3D Printed Hybrid Robotic Exoskeleton Helps Paraplegic Woman Walk Again

First 3D Printed Hybrid Robotic Exoskeleton Helps Paraplegic Woman Walk Again
A keen skier who was left paralysed from the waist down after an accident can now walk again, thanks to the world's first 3D printed hybrid robotic exoskeleton suit.
Three-dimensional printer makers 3D systems have been working with robotic exoskeleton maker Ekso Bionics to make a custom suit for test pilot Amanda Boxtel, who was paralysed in a fall on the slopes of Aspen, Colorado in 1992.
Despite being told that she would never walk again, the incredible video here shows that through using the Ekso-Suit, Boxtel was able to stand up and walk, aided by crutches.

Robots Aboard International Space Station

Robots Aboard International Space Station
Ames Research Center, MIT and Johnson Space Center have two new robotics projects aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Robonaut 2, a two-armed humanoid robot with astronaut-like dexterity, is currently undergoing onboard testing. The second is the SPHERES satellite, which recently got a smartphone upgrade that gives it eyes, ears and a sensor array. These robots could assume mundane, sometimes dangerous tasks: monitoring radiation, filter change-outs, some extravehicular activities

MIT teaches robots to adapt

MIT teaches robots to adapt
Most commercial robotic arms perform what roboticists call pick and place tasks: The arm picks up an object in one location and places it in another. General-purpose household robots, however, would have to be able to manipulate objects of any shape, left in any location. And today, commercially available robots dont have anything like the dexterity of the human hand.

At this years IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, the premier robotics conference, students in the Learning and Intelligent Systems Group at MITs Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory will present a pair of papers showing how household robots could use a little lateral thinking to compensate for their physical shortcomings.

Here we see MIT senior Annie Holladay demonstrate and describe how her algorithm helps the robot adapt by using both of its arms instead of just one.

DARPA Robotics Challenge: Toward a User-Guided Manipulation Framework
We seek to create a user-guided manipulation framework for High Degree-of-Freedom robots operating in environments with limited communication to apply to the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Our approach consists of three elements: (1) a user-guided perception interface which assists the user to provide task level commands to the robot, (2) planning algorithms that autonomously generate robot motion while obeying relevant constraints, and (3) a trajectory execution and monitoring system.

ABSTRACT

It is often said that genomics science is on a Moore's law, growing exponentially in data throughput, number of assembled genomes, lowered cost, etc.; and yet, it has not delivered the biomedical promises made a decade ago: personalized medicine; genomic characterization of diseases like cancer, schizophrenia, and autism; bio-markers for common complex diseases;
