DARPA Cheetah Sets Speed Record for Legged Robots

This video shows a demonstration of the "Cheetah" robot galloping at speeds of up to 18 miles per hour (mph), setting a new land speed record for legged robots. The previous record was 13.1 mph, set in 1989.

The robot's movements are patterned after those of fast-running animals in nature. The robot increases its stride and running speed by flexing and un-flexing its back on each step, much as an actual cheetah does.

Meet RoboSimian, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's official entry at the DARPA Robotics Challenge in December 2013. Also known as "Clyde," the robot is is four-footed, but can also stand on two feet. It has four general-purpose limbs and hands capable of both mobility and manipulation. It came in 5th place out of 16 entries. See RoboSimian in action at the disaster-response competition. Challenges includes turning a valve, traversing uneven terrain, clearing debris, opening and passing through doorways.

FPV Racing Mini Quadcopters Advanced Course

Such a fun day. A small West Devon FPV meet was organised by the guys from BBRC. The location was perfectly suited to this sport with different sections to the garden with mixes of nice long runs, woodland and obstacles.

I have not flown with many other people FPV let alone racing them but I thought this sounded a fun challenge. So I packed the car with all my flying gear and made my way to Bideford to meet the guys.

We managed to get 4 mini quads in the air for a race at one point but other commitments made a few people leave as it was a nice day so that just left 3 of us to have some fun.

I was having major problems on the day with my FPV cam, the lens had become loose in a hard crash from another day and had about .1mm of play which translated to a very blurred and vibrating image which was intermittent but did not stop the day.

This was all for fun and to meet new FPV pilots in the area, it was so nice to meet such a friendly and skilled bunch on the day.

NASA Astronauts Conduct Spacewalk on ISS

Clad in U.S. spacesuits, Expedition 41 Flight Engineers Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency conducted a spacewalk outside the International Space Station Oct. 7 to relocate a failed cooling pump and to install a power cable device designed to provide backup electrical capability to the stations rail car system. The spacewalk was the 182nd in support of station assembly and maintenance and the first for both Wiseman and Gerst.

Final Mission at RoboCup German Open 2014 Rescue Robot League competition

This video shows the complete final mission of Team Hector Darmstadt at the RoboCup German Open 2014 Rescue Robot League competition. We focus on robot autonomy, so the robot is controlled autonomously whenever possible. The robot has to search for simulated victims (emulated by babydolls and heating pads) and also map QR codes located in the environment. The environment is unknown to the robot, it thus has to perform Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) to localize itself and learn a map of the environment at the same time.

Heli-Max 1Si Quadcopter Review, Flight Test, & First Impressions

The new 1Si with onboard video, sound, and still camera shots is really a neat micro RC quadcopter. The video isn't good at all unless there is good lighting; however, with good lighting the video quality is pretty impressive. The sound works, but, it isn't the best, and you can't hear anything over the noise of the rotor blades when the quad is in the air anyways.

The controls feel a bit 'mushy' to me.

Hawk Attacks Quadcopter!

On Oct 8th, I was flying my quadcopter at Magazine Beach Park in Cambridge, when a hawk decided he wasn't too happy with my invasion of his airspace...

As far as I could tell, the juvenile red-tailed hawk came out unscathed, and having defeated his prey, was happy to retreat. (As soon as he flew at me, I throttled down the props to try to minimize any harm to the bird.) The quadcopter came out unscathed as well.

Fully Autonomous Quadcopter control

Our latest university project at Aalborg University includes the making of a fully autonomous quadcopter for sweeping mine fields.

In this video we demonstrate the current regulator capabilities as the quadcopter is being controlled autonomously by a PC connected to a Vicon vision system and then running our Matlab script.

The Quadcopter itself only consists of a Q450 frame from HobbyKing with four motors and ESC's connected to a KK-Multicopter board with a 3-axis gyroscope.
