DARPA Robotics Challenge: Toward a User-Guided Manipulation Framework

DARPA Robotics Challenge: Toward a User-Guided Manipulation Framework
We seek to create a user-guided manipulation framework for High Degree-of-Freedom robots operating in environments with limited communication to apply to the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Our approach consists of three elements: (1) a user-guided perception interface which assists the user to provide task level commands to the robot, (2) planning algorithms that autonomously generate robot motion while obeying relevant constraints, and (3) a trajectory execution and monitoring system.

Rehearsal of NASA's Valkyrie Manipulation Capabilities (4x speed)

Rehearsal of NASA's Valkyrie Manipulation Capabilities (4x speed)
NASA, the Human Centered Robotics Lab at UT Austin and Texas A&M made it to the DRC Trials. Here Valkyrie manipulates a valve while standing up. Valkyrie is a new bipedal robot that was designed and built from scratch in just 9 months. Although this year we did not have a lot of time to get the hardware and software finalized to fully compete, we are here in the competition for the endgame in 2014.

Dynamic Robot Manipulation

BigDog handles heavy objects. The goal is to use the strength of the legs and torso to help power motions of the arm. This sort of dynamic, whole-body approach to manipulation is used routinely by human athletes and will enhance the performance of advanced robots.
