NASA Developing Mining Robot for Moon, Mars NASA is developing the RASSOR mining robot to collect soil, or regolith, on the moon or Mars so it can be processed into rocket fuel, breathable air and other commodities. By using materials available at other locations in the solar system, astronauts don't have to carry it all from Earth.

NASA's Regolith Mining Competition
NASA's Regolith Mining Competition Highlights from the NASA's Fifth Annual NASA Robotic Mining Competition. The competition is for university-level students to design and build a mining robot that can traverse the simulated Martian chaotic terrain, excavate Martian regolith and deposit the regolith into a Collector Bin within 10 minutes.
