The SOFIA mission is an airborne telescope that uses infrared astronomy to peer deeper into the Universe than ever before. SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, is NASA's highly-modified Boeing 747SP aircraft with a 100-inch (2.5 meter) diameter mirror installed at the rear of the aircraft. Cygnus Mission Previewed

During a news conference from Wallops Flight Facility NASA previewed the launch and mission of Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft on a demonstration mission to the International Space Station. The launch is targeted for Wednesday, Sept. 18 between 10:50 to 11:05 a.m. EDT from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport Pad-0A at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in eastern Virginia.

Rachmaninoff Basin, Mercury

This is a movie of Mercury's Rachmaninoff impact basin. An enhanced-color image has been draped over a digital elevation model of the surface. The vertical exaggeration is 7 times. The basin's outer rim is about 306 km in diameter and the inner (peak) ring is about 140 km in diameter. The volcanic smooth plains within the center appear tan in this presentation, emphasizing their compositional contrast with the dark, bluer rocks that form the peak ring mountains.

Testing a Mobius ActionCam (1080p 30fps) on my quadcopter

The Mobius ActionCam is a cheap (69USD) and tiny full HD camera, that is very good value for money in my opinion, especially considering that the GoPro HERO3 Black Edition I normally use, costs almost 9 times as much (450 EUR) in Europe.

For this test, I attached the camera with velcro to the top of the dampening kit on my Eyefly Goliath frame that was already carrying GoPro HERO3 Black Edition.

Here is the video we all were waiting for. This video proves the point very well. Quadcopters built using quality components and flown using good gear, like Baby Widow Maker, can be very effective for Search and Rescue missions. This video was shot using Baby Widow Maker quad and 5.8ghz FPV system with hand made non precision Clover leaf antennas. I, the Pilot was not told the location of my target yet, it was just totally fun to find my target so quick using Baby Widow Maker quad.

With the objective of finding alternatives to propellers for underwater propulsion, the robotics team at Caltech is testing different synthetic jet actuators. We studied a jellyfish-like actuator using mechanical arms and the addition of an elastic skin in the future.
The robotic arms are powered with a servo motor through a ball screw. A program was developed to control the motion of the arms. The idea is to develop the mechanism into an autonomous underwater vehicle that can be used for marine research.
