CES 2015: Keecker robot on patrol with a projector

We've heard of robotic vacuum cleaners patrolling the house - but what about video projectors?

That is the idea behind Keecker, a robot controlled by a mobile device, which can travel round your home projecting films, computer games and even "digital wallpaper".

The Paris-based start-up has raised more than quarter-of-a-million dollars for the idea on Kickstarter.

Leo Kelion talked to Keecker's Alix Mobuchon to learn more about the concept.

Boston Dynamics robots get 1980s movie montage

Some brilliant YouTube spark has cut footage of Boston Dynamics' humanoid robots performing feats of strength and agility to "Scarface (Push it to the Limit)."

The video takes a bunch of milestones made by Boston dynamics' humanoid robots PetMan and Atlas -- PetMan doing push-ups and walking on a treadmill, Atlas stumbling over uneven terrain and climbing stairs -- set to one of the most classic montage tracks of all time -- "Scarface (Push it to the Limit)," written by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte for the 1983 cult-classic crime film "Scarface."

Although the film uses the montage to document protagonist Tony Montana's meteoric ascent through the ranks of Miami's criminal underworld, in "Push It to The Limit Petman, Atlas Boston Dynamics" it's used more as a training montage, a la "Rocky."

It fits absolutely perfectly, though.

Mini Mamba V2 mini quadcopter review (part 2)

In part two I look at how the Mini Mamba V2 performs with its props tilted to about 10 degrees.

Do I like it?

Yes I do.

It feels more comfortable at speed with the tilted props and still has the nice and predictable handling it had before. The top speed is improved and at 3/4 throttle it skips along very nicely indeed. Whilst further improvements might be possible by increasing the angle further, I think it would then become more difficult to land and engage in slower proximity flying due to the much lower horizon on the video image.

And yes, this miniquad sure is tough enough.

Mini Mamba V2 mini quadcopter review (part 1)

The Mini Mamba mini quadcopter has been updated and this is version 2 which has many improvements over the original.

Although I did angle the Mobius camera platform, clearly, without the props also tilted, this machine could do with even more angle on the cameras.

Just like the original, this mini quadcopter handles very nicely and has a good turn of speed, given its somewhat larger size than most other 250 class miniquads such as the Blackout Mini H, ZMR250, QAV250 and MXP230.

Although perhaps not as nimble as the smaller miniquads, it will hold its own in racing and, as you'll see in part 2 of this review, its very tough.

Expedition 37 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin, NASA Flight Engineer Karen Nyberg and European Space Agency Flight Engineer Luca Parmitano were greeted in a traditional ceremony at the airport in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, on Nov. 11, hours after landing in their Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft in Kazakhstan. Two Generations of Windblown Sediments

This colorful scene is situated in the Noctis Labyrinthus, perched high on the Tharsis rise in the upper reaches of the Valles Marineris canyon system.

Targeting the bright rimmed bedrock knobs, the image also captures the interaction of two distinct types of windblown sediments. Surrounding the bedrock knobs is a network of pale reddish ridges with a complex interlinked morphology. These pale ridges resemble the simpler "transverse aeolian ridges" (called TARs) that are common in the equatorial regions of Mars.

The TARs are still poorly understood, and are variously ascribed to dunes produced by reversing winds, coarse grained ripples, or indurated dust deposits.
